Research and Evidence Base

For nearly 15 years, researchers have been studying the processes, outcomes and impacts of Mental Health First Aid in the United States. This growing body of mental health research shows the power of early intervention. 

Mental Health First Aid Works

Over 91 peer-reviewed studies have shown that MHFA works. People who are trained in MHFA:

  • Show reduced stigma and increased empathy toward those with mental health challenges.
  • Know the signs, symptoms and risk factors of mental health and substance use challenges.
  • Show greater confidence and likelihood to help someone in distress.
  • Use their skills anknowledge as First Aiders to manage their own mental wellbeing.

MHFA Research Findings

Adult MHFA

Studies of Adult MHFA have found that individuals trained in the program show increased mental health literacy and confidence to help someone in distress.

Studies of Youth MHFA have found that individuals trained in the program show increased mental health literacy and confidence to help a young person in distress.

teen Mental Health First Aid

A study of tMHFA on 1,915 teens across 44 high schools found that after the course, teens showed increased endorsement of helpful intentions and decreased endorsement of unhelpful or harmful intentions toward a peer.

What Mental Health Studies Say

Our research summary collects the highlights from over a decade of mental health studies. The results make the case for MHFA, showing that it reduces stigma and builds confidence. Evidence shows that people who are trained in Mental Health First Aid actually use those skills to help people in their social circles.  

MHFA Doctoral Student Grants

Each year, the National Council gives a one-time award of $5,000 to four outstanding doctoral students. These grantees show strong potential as researchers in their fields and are interested in studying the impact of MHFA trainings in the U.S.
