Mental Health First Aid Works
Over 91 peer-reviewed studies have shown that MHFA works. People who are trained in MHFA:
- Show reduced stigma and increased empathy toward those with mental health challenges.
- Know the signs, symptoms and risk factors of mental health and substance use challenges.
- Show greater confidence and likelihood to help someone in distress.
- Use their skills anknowledge as First Aiders to manage their own mental wellbeing.

Our research summary collects the highlights from over a decade of mental health studies. The results make the case for MHFA, showing that it reduces stigma and builds confidence. Evidence shows that people who are trained in Mental Health First Aid actually use those skills to help people in their social circles.

MHFA Doctoral Student Grants
Each year, the National Council gives a one-time award of $5,000 to four outstanding doctoral students. These grantees show strong potential as researchers in their fields and are interested in studying the impact of MHFA trainings in the U.S.
