Support the One Mind Pledge
Support mental health, strengthen your department and build community trust. Take the IACP’s One Mind Pledge with Mental Health First Aid (MHFA). By doing so, your agency is pledging to improve public safety through evidence-based training, strong partnerships and clear policies.
What Is the One Mind Pledge?
Led by the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP), the One Mind Pledge calls on public safety agencies to improve their response to mental health-related calls.
Departments commit to three key actions:
- Train staff in MHFA for Public Safety or Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) skills.
- Partner with local mental health organizations.
- Adopt a mental health response policy.
Agencies that complete these steps within 1-3 years are officially One Mind Pledge compliant.
Why This Work Matters
1 en 5
U.S. adults experience a mental illness each year.
82 %
of police officers face trauma on duty, which can lead to alcohol use, PTSD, suicide and depression.
92 %
of police officers say they’d be more open to getting help if others spoke up first.
How MHFA Supports the Pledge
MHFA for Public Safety is a practical, evidence-based training designed for public safety professionals, including law enforcement staff, first responders and 911 dispatchers. It helps them manage high-stress calls while protecting their own wellbeing.
Respond With Skill and Empathy
MHFA teaches officers to de-escalate mental health crises with confidence and care.
Identify Warning Signs Early
Learn how to recognize signs of mental health and substance use challenges.
Build an Organizational Culture of Resilience
Support your team’s mental wellbeing from within by cutting stigma and building awareness.
Eric Weaver
MHFA National Trainer
“MHFA for Public Safety allows officers and other public safety personnel the opportunity to learn much more than they would ever learn in an academy-type setting, especially since most officers being trained in this module have long been out of the academy. The curriculum creates a chance for officers to really understand the importance of empathy, compassion and respect for those living with mental health challenges.”
Capitán Joseph Coffey
Rhode Island
“If we can prevent today’s depressed person from becoming tomorrow’s barricaded person, then we’ve done our job on many, many levels.”
