Four Ways to Move Forward this Mental Health Awareness Month

May is Mental Health Awareness Month and this year, the National Council for Mental Wellbeing, including Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) USA, invites you to take four ways forward for mental health.

Mental Health Awareness Month is a chance for you to make an impact in your community with evidence-based training, resources and tools. But this month is about more than raising awareness: It’s also about taking your mental health matters into your own hands and focusing on your mental wellbeing. As you join us in spreading the word through awareness and advocacy, remember to take care of yourself along the way.

Four Ways Forward for Mental Health is an invitation for you to take action through four key avenues. By raising your voice, prioritizing your self-care, celebrating mental wellbeing and being the difference, you can make a positive impact on your own mental health as you help advance awareness in your community. Together, we can make mental wellbeing a reality for everyone.

Here’s How You Can Take Action in May:

  1. Raise your voice and advocate for change. Speak up about mental health, contact your elected officials and stay up to date on breaking policy news. You have the power to break down stigma and create a more supportive environment for those struggling with mental health challenges.
  2. Lead by example — prioritize your self-care. Self-care is essential for your overall health and your ability to support others. Make your mental health a priority to set a positive example for others.
  3. Celebrate mental wellbeing. Embrace and honor your mental wellbeing journey. Take pride in the steps you’ve taken to prioritize your mental health and inspire others to do the same.
  4. Be the difference — get involved. Make an impact in your community. If you aren’t already, consider becoming certified as a Mental Health First Aider or Instructor.
